Ultiverse Integrates Chainlink VRF to Help Power Random Gameplay Experiences and a Fair NFT Rewards Distribution
We’re excited to announce that Ultiverse — building an AAA social gaming metaverse on Web3 — has integrated Chainlink Verifiable Random Function (VRF) on both BNB Chain and Ethereum mainnets.
By integrating the industry-leading decentralized oracle network, Ultiverse now has access to a tamper-proof and auditable source of randomness needed to offer our players challenging, unpredictable scenarios and environments as they explore the vast alien worlds in Endless Loop. Ultimately this creates a more exciting and transparent user experience, as users can come across events and gameplay scenarios that mimic the unpredictability of the real world, enhancing the immersion in a virtual world.
Ultiverse is connecting Web3 with an immersive VR-compatible virtual world that will be home to the first truly AAA game built on blockchain technology. With Unreal Engine 5-based virtual reality, players will be able to import and use their own NFTs from a multitude of chains. The tokenomics of Ultiverse will encourage a comprehensive ecosystem that features mutually beneficial relationships among stakeholders and strives to create a first-of-its-kind MetaFi. Electric Sheep, the genesis PFP NFT collection of Ultiverse, is also utilizing Chainlink VRF to help ensure fairness and transparency during the minting process and help generate randomized traits for NFTs in the collection. Electric Sheep holders will have exclusive access to a host of utilities and benefits, such as a matching 3D Avatars of their Electric Sheep(s), access to our alpha launches, token airdrops, the Land Deep airdrop, and individual airdrops of each trait on their Electric Sheep NFT.
The Lead Designer of Electric Sheep is Jing Laing, known for her exceptional work as a designer on Elden Ring. The collection also features collaborations with famed Disney artists Tom Bancroft and Tony Bancroft from The Lion King, Mulan, and Beauty and the Beast.
In order to help offer Ultiverse players engaging and unpredictable gaming experiences in our PVP and PVE game modes and to help ensure fairness and transparency in our NFT mint and subsequent rewards distributions, we needed access to a secure random number generator (RNG) that any user could independently audit. However, RNG solutions for smart contracts require several security considerations to prevent manipulation and ensure system integrity. For instance, RNG solutions derived from blockchain data like block hashes can be exploited by miners/validators, while off-chain RNG solutions derived from off-chain APIs are opaque and don’t provide users with definitive proof about the integrity of the process.
After reviewing various solutions, we selected Chainlink VRF because it’s based on cutting-edge academic research, supported by a time-tested oracle network, and secured through the generation and on-chain verification of cryptographic proofs that prove the integrity of each random number supplied to smart contracts.
Chainlink VRF works by combining block data that is still unknown when the request is made with the oracle node’s pre-committed private key to generate both a random number and a cryptographic proof. The Ultiverse smart contract will only accept the random number input if it has a valid cryptographic proof, and the cryptographic proof can only be generated if the VRF process is tamper-proof. This provides our users with automated and verifiable assurances directly on-chain that the NFT minting process and the outcomes of in-game events and enemy encounters are provably fair and were not tampered with by the oracle, outside entities, or the Ultiverse team.
